From April 15, 2009 on, in Beijing newly-issued 6-month F visas can only be valid till Sep. 15, 2009. The 1-year F visas (NO limitation of each stay) are NOT available again. And there are NO multiple-entry ones. Only 0, 1 or 2-entry ones are available.

The new visa restriction is mainly because of the approaching 60th anniversary of P.R.China founding and the big celebration.

Which means expats will have the same trouble like last year, getting their visa extensions :(. I was so glad when the damn Olympics were over.

These knee-jerk blanket restrictions make it very hard for foreign companies and government agencies to conduct ongoing business or enter into long-term contracts with China. We put up with a lot of nonsense between March and October last year because of the Olympic Games, perhaps understandably, but now rules change again and restrictions reappear at the drop of a hat. It is very hard to confidental plan ahead and fulfill commitments.

Reducing the stay and increasing the number of entries actually increases the security risk. Genuine business travellers are the real losers. If you are in Beijing or northern China the 30-day limit means travelling from Beijing to Hong Kong and return just to get two stamps in your passport when you already have a valid visa that allows you to be in China. It doesn't make much sense; particularly causing so much unnecessary travel OUT/IN through International cities/airports at a time of world health crisis.

China ought to be smart enough to recognize its friends, those helping China, and give exemption to genuine business travellers with letters of invitation from the China government, its agencies, or well-established large businesses. This is particularly true where an indvidual's credentials have already been established on a previous visit to China. A more suitable visa can be obtained through an agent but is not readily available outside of China or direct to the business traveller.

C'mon China government; show that you treat me as a welcome friend.

Many foreigners in Beijing and cities in the north go to Mongolia, Korea or Japan for the exit/re-entry purpose.
It is cheaper and easier if it is visa free for you to enter those countries.
